We have all most likely seen a honey dipper before. It is typically made from wood and is a simple kitchen utensil comprising of a handle with an elongated ball at the end with deep grooves. Historically, honey dippers were made of olive wood and are thought to date back to Ancient China. The honey dippers that accompany Wall’s Honey Co products are made from bamboo – specifically selected due to its relatively low impact on our environment. Bamboo requires less water and grows more prolifically than other wooden materials, making it an environmentally gentle and sustainable choice.
The honey dipper uses the laws of Gravity to keep the honey in place during the transfer to its destination and avoid a sticky mess on the kitchen bench. By holding the dipper at an angle and constantly rotating it, the gravitational force keeps the honey in the grooves of the dipper and prevents it from falling and creating a mess. When you are ready for the honey to fall onto your toast or into your cuppa, simply stop twirling the dipper and the honey will drip off. The dipper also provides more control over the distribution of honey than a spoon or knife, and these are difficult to continuously rotate. The design of the humble honey dipper has not changed over 100’s of years, proving that it is the best utensil to use for honey.
